This house post, carved in yellow cedar, is integral to the northeast entry to the Day Lodge. The carvings include creatures significant to the culture of the Squamish First Nation and represent a traditional offering of salmon to visitors. The Squamish First Nation was one of four Host Nations that welcomed the world to traditional territories.
The sculpture is part of the art collection commissioned by the Organizing Committee of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). The collection is a celebration of aboriginal art and a legacy of the 2010 Games.
Check out the You Tube video feature on the 2010 Games aboriginal art program. This includes artist Aaron Nelson-Moody, other artists commissioned for the Games, as well as artist Connie Watts, who managed the art program for VANOC. The aboriginal art legacy is described in the book O Siyam (John Wiley & Sons, 2009).
