This totem and its presence in Whistler Olympic Plaza represent the role of First Nations as partners in delivering the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Whistler’s 2010 Games experience was imbued by First Nations culture and participation. Four First Nations in the lower Vancouver mainland and Sea to Sky corridor were designated as the Four Host Nations, as the Winter Games took place on their territorial land. The Lil’wat and Squamish First Nations were Host Nations and their people are represented by this sculpture.
Creation of the sculpture was facilitated by the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, the First Nations and the Resort Municipality of Whistler. The art relates the traditional story of how tools were given to man.
